With an unofficial tally of 1.5 million for Friday, it looks like Gigli will limp across the finish line with about 4 million dollars opening weekend...5 would be a minor miracle.
This is not an "I told you so" post, since I actually was expecting something like 12 million or so on the assumption there are enough stupid serfs in North America to prop up trash like this. But Gil's incessant posts about the "buzz growing" were grating on my nerves.
Gil, the only "buzz" on this movie was how badly it would tank. If the media smells blood, they will swarm. And while people may dismiss a few bad reviews or go see something knowing they'll enjoy it anyway (sequel), there is no getting around a public execution. The press needed a new "Heaven's Gate," and they got it.
The base problem with Gigli is that the concept would've worked best as a low-budget indie with cult actors. The whole "Bennifer" thing dissolves the fourth wall, and we're left with Lopez - and not her character - offering up a monologue on her private parts.
Sphincter had a post in another thread about how eager the media is to tear down the successful. Sphinc, while that's often true, I think here it's more a case of growing tired of actors selling themselves instead of their characters and work. Jennifer Lopez is an enterprise to me, not an artist.
I hope this is an omen that future Hollywood vanity projects need a reality check. And I hate that this really soils "Jersey Girl," which is another Ben/Jen film, but one that's actually well-made.
This is definitely one for the record books. Affleck can actually be quite good at times, but he's being assimilated into the J. Lo Collective. Better luck next time.
